Don't Go Backwards
I pray that everyone had a beautiful Christmas. Today, God gave me the topic of "Don't Go Backwards" for this month's theme of Persevere. As you work to move forward and persevere, there is always a temptation to go backwards.
Backwards: toward a less advanced state; retrogressively:
You must always remember that you have an enemy who is working to stop your progress. John 10:10 states, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."
You have to be careful not to go backwards for two reasons:
1. You hinder or delay where God desires take you. 2. You forfeit your healing or deliverance.
1. You hinder or delay where God desires take you.
God tells Jeremiah in Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." Challenges will come on your journey to your dream, goal, or vision. You have to be sure that you have a made up mind to press forward beyond the temptation to go backwards away from where God is trying to take you. The enemy does not want you to continue to move forward because he knows your potential to impact the world for the greater. A generation could be changed by your obedience. A community could turn for the better because of your willingness to be available to the plans of God. There are endless possibilities with God. However, we can jeopardize our season when we choose to fall back to the things that God has helped us to mature and grow out of. Therefore, don't focus on the difficulties of now because they are just opportunities for you to experience greater victories!
2. You forfeit your healing or deliverance.
In Genesis 19:26 it states, "But his wife, from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt." This is an unfortunate instance in the bible where the wife of Lot looked back at the judgment of God on a people who choose to continue to act wickedly. Instructions were given to Lot and his wife to not look back, and when Lot's wife did so any way, she turned into a pillar of salt. Instead of focusing on looking forward at what God had ahead for Lot and his wife, Lot's wife decided to look back. She forfeited a future because she was interested in the events of the past. Now, Jesus' blood allows grace and mercy to cover us, so I do not believe that God judgement for disobedience is always physical death. However, there are spiritual deaths where we need God to bring restoration to our hearts and minds when we go backwards. God has delivered, brought victories, and restoration in your life, so why would you allow the temptation of the past that hurt you, burdened you, captured you, tortured you, or damaged you to draw you away from forward progress?
My hope is that in 2018 you focus on what is ahead for you rather than yielding to the temptation to begin to indulge in the very things that caused you to be perplexed, distressed, and hopeless. What God has for you is greater than the challenges that you may be facing or the continued existence of waiting for the promises to be fulfilled in your life.
Don't go back to:
These things are toxic to you. They seem appealing because it is easy to revert back to the things that come easy to the flesh (human nature) when trouble or waiting is present. Nevertheless, what God has for you is too magnificent to forfeit!
Be strong! Persevere! God Loves You!
