Wisdom Series: Proverbs 8
Proverbs 8- The Cry of Wisdom
Proverbs 8: 1-5
Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice? 2 At the highest point along the way, where the paths meet, she takes her stand; 3 beside the gate leading into the city, at the entrance, she cries aloud: 4 “To you, O people, I call out; I raise my voice to all mankind. 5 You who are simple, gain prudence; you who are foolish, set your hearts on it.
Wisdom and Understanding are calling out to people who are void of understanding
From the high places and gates at the entrance of cities because wisdom is crying out and is trying to get your attention!
Why? To teach, instruct, bring warning of destruction and death
6 Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.
7 For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
8 All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.
9 They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.
10 Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
Excellent- superior merit, remarkably good, extraordinary- These are the value of the teaching of wisdom. You cannot go wrong with Wisdom
We gain truth because wickedness is an abomination to wisdom. This is powerful that Wisdom is so pure, that anything opposite of it is considered wickedness and is an abomination.
Abomination- anything greatly disliked or abhorred, vile, shameful, detestable action, condition, or habit
These verses then say receive wisdom over all else that seems so valuable
Proverbs 8: 12-13
12 I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
Dwell- to live or stay as a permanent resident, reside, to ponder in thought, speech, or writing
Prudence- wise in practical affairs (preparing for the future), caution in practical matters (discretion), care in the management of resources
Therefore, verse 12 days that wisdom resides with prudence, which means that it covers (can help us with) our everyday life. If you want to know how to live this life as a believer, we read proverbs and learn to let wisdom (a virtue found of God that we need) be our teacher.
In verse 13, we learn about the fear of the Lord is to hate evil just as God does.
Hate- to dislike intensely or passionately, to be unwilling, extreme hostility toward, detest
Evil- morally wrong or bad, immoral, wicked, harmful, injurious, accompanied by misfortune or suffering
Pride- a high or in ordinance opinion of one’s own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, the state or feeling of being proud, becoming or dignified sense of what is due to oneself or one’s position
Arrogance- offensive display or superiority or self-importance, overbearing pride.
Froward- willfully contrary, not easily managed
We do not want pride and arrogance to be a part of our lives. We have to hate evil: Have a passionate dislike for evil. The love we have for God is shown in our hate of evil (sin and the devil). Then we should not speak forward things (things contrary to the word of God and truth)
Rulers and leaders are able to lead effectively due to wisdom
We must pray for our leaders to operate in wisdom in the coming years. It is important with the evil in the land!
18 Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.
19 My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.
20 I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:
21 That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.
Wisdom brings blessings.
Durable-able to resist wear or decay, lasting, enduring
Righteousness- the quality or state of being just or rightful
Revenue- the return or yield from any kind of property, patent, or service, an amount of money regularly coming in
Treasures- wealth or riches stored or accumulated
In these verses it gives us the blessings that comes from wisdom. Durable riches (not like the wealth of drug or stolen money that goes away quickly). The ability to live rightly. Its value is greater than anything that we could ever gain naturally. Finally, it continues to give us things that we can keep as treasures for everyday life.
-Wisdom was at the beginning with God, we should not refuse wisdom, and we should be watching and waiting daily for wisdom. Finally, when we learn wisdom and choose to ignore it the bible says that we wrongeth our own souls (we hurt ourselves).
