Wisdom Series: Proverbs 6

Proverbs 6- Wise Advice

Proverbs 6:1-5- Make Sure Your Friend

Proverbs 6:3 “Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou are dome into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.”

  • In this particular passage of scripture, it is addressing when you borrow from your friend that make good on your work. When you are a person of your word, your friendships will not be destroyed even when you borrow or repay.

Proverbs 6:6-11- Word and Be Wise to take Care of Home

Proverbs 6:6,8

6.“Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways and be wise:”

8. "Provided her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest”

  • God is concerned about the total man. He understands that on this Earth we have natural needs and responsibilities. Therefore, though Solomon we gain this wisdom of taking care of the home through the use of an ant analogy.

  • Ants- They are deemed to be successful. They are said to thrive all over the earth. Ants are great planners. Before winter, the store up enough food for their colony, so when the difficulties of winter come, they do not lack anything.

  • God wants us to prepare just as the ants do.

Sluggard- lazy, habitually inactive

  • We never know when life challenges may hit, so when things are going will, we have to make wise choices to save and find ways to be productive so there is no lack when challenges come.

  • Or as Proverbs 6:11 states, Poverty shall come.

Proverbs 6:12-15

Proverbs 6:12 “A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a forward mouth”

  • Froward- willfully contrary, not easily managed, disobedient, and difficult

  • It is interesting that the Bible lumps a naughty person and a wicked man together. That speaks to how we categorize wrong. We often times justify some wrong as not as bad as others. God does not do that. Wrong is wrong and right is right. We must discern whether or not something is wrong or right based on the stands of God, which are found in the Bible.

Proverbs 6:14 “Frowardness is in his heart, he devisesth is mischief continually, he soweth discord”

  • Discord- lack of harmony between persons or things, disagreement, strife, dispute, confusion, or dissonance

  • The first thing we must notice is what is in the heart. Proverbs 3:3 says we should have mercy and truth around our necks and written on our hearts.

  • The second problem is the fact that this person is not one of peace and truth at all. They cannot be trusted or followed.

Proverbs 6:15 “Therefore, his calamity came suddenly, suddenly shall he be broken without remedy”

  • Calamity- great misfortune or disaster, grievous affliction, adversity, misery

  • This is the warning for a naughty or wicked man, so we should distance ourselves, but we should love and pray for them so they do not get the reward of their evil ways.

Proverbs 6:16-19 – Things the Lord hates

16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

  • We should hate what the Lord hates so we will not find ourselves doing the things that he hates.

Proverbs 6:20-35- Heed Parents' instruction

  • Wisdom says listen to your parents (remember wisdom comes from experience, knowledge, and good judgment)

Proverbs 6:23 “For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:”

  • We listen to the lessons from our parents because they will be light in dark places. The enemy wants us to be lured away by lusts (lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life-1 John 2:16) Don’t allow the outer shell of beauty to control your life. There is a stain and stigma that comes with it.

  • Vs. 32 says that “he that doeth it destroyed his own soul”

Take the wise advice of this chapter:

  1. Make sure your friend if you have borrowed or made a promise, do it.

  2. Work and Be wise to take care of your needs and responsibilities so that in the day of challenge you will not lose hope or lack.

  3. Watch the company that you keep. The naught person and wicked man have destruction laying ahead.

  4. Hate what God hates

  5. Heed Parents instruction. It will be light in dark places and help steer you away from the traps of the devil.
