Wisdom Unveiled Provb. 4 & 5

Proverbs 4- Wisdom Personified

Proverbs 4:5-6 – Hang onto Wisdom

“Get Wisdom, get understanding: forget it not, neither decline from the words of my mouth”

“Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her and she shall keep thee”

Forget-cease or fail to remember, to omit or neglect unintentionally, or neglect willfully

Forsake- to quite or leave entirely, to give up or renounce

Preserve- to keep alive or in existence, make lasting

Keep- to hold or retain in one’s possession, store, to maintain in usable condition

The first verse is great because it deals with holding on to wisdom. It tells us not to forget wisdom. This is twofold to me. 1. Don’t forget because of failure to continue to study the Word of God. 2. Don’t forget by intentionally omitting or neglecting what you know because of your study of the Word of God.

The second verse is great as well because it tells you the benefits of not letting go of wisdom. If you do not forsake (quit or leave entirely), then you will be preserved (kept alive) and kept (maintain in usable condition) by wisdom.

Proverbs 4:7 - Importance of Wisdom

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding”

Principal- First or highest rank; importance, value

Understanding- Mental process of a person who comprehend

This verses wants us to put wisdom in a high priority. We are to desire wisdom and get understanding. I love that it says get understanding because it lets us know that we cannot just hear wisdom. The understanding piece is important because that is what will bring about acceptance of the truth and application of the truth.

Proverbs 4:8-9 – Security and Blessings from Wisdom

“Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee honour, when thou dost embrace her.”

“She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.”

Exalt- to raise in rank, honor, power, character, quality

Promote- to help or encourage to exist or flourish

Honour- honesty, fairness, or integrity in one’s beliefs and actions high respect

Embrace- To take or clasp in the arms, to receive gladly or eagerly, accept willingly

Grace- favor or good will

Glory- great praise, honor, or distinction

These verses let us know of the security and blessings that come from wisdom. It tells us to exalt (raise in honor) wisdom, and it yields promotion (help to flourish) and honor (high respect), when we embrace (receive gladly or eagerly). Then it does on to say that wisdom will bring grace (favor) on our head and a crown of glory (great praise, honor, or distinction).

There are so many benefits of operating in wisdom. There are a lot of things in life that we desire to do, and wisdom will help us to reach those goals and overcome different challenges. Moreover, wisdom will bring favor and distinction to the things that we choose to do. We do not have to look to people to be promoted or recognition, when we seek God for wisdom, God will let cause all those things come.

Proverbs 4:14-19- Avoid Evil

These verses give us instruction to avoid evil and the people who do evil. I know you have heard the sayings: the birds of a feather flock together, you lay down with dogs you get up with flees, they will either pull you or your will pull them, or watch the company you keep. If you want promotion, honor, grace, and all the other things mentioned in the verse at the beginning of this chapter, then you have to avoid evil.

Proverbs 4: 23-27- There are further instructions to do right

Doing right according to the Word of God, will lead to blessings and not destruction or death.

Proverbs 5- Warning

Proverbs 5:1-14 – Avoid being lured away from Wisdom by lust, fornication, or adultery created by the devil

Proverbs 5:15-23- Do the Right thing so you don’t die not heeding instruction or wisdom
