The Treasure called Wisdom
The Treasure called Wisdom
Proverbs 2:4-The treasure
“If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasure.”
Treasure: wealth or riches stored or accumulated; wealth, rich materials, valuable things; anything or a person greatly valued or highly prized.
Seek: To go in search or quest of, to try to find or discover by searching or questioning.
The Bible states that Wisdom should be sought after as treasure. Therefore, it is understood that wisdom is extremely valuable. When you think of people searching for treasure I think of pirate stories. Where there is something that is something of great value that everyone wants, and they will sometimes use unconventional means to possess it. People lie, cheat, and steal to obtain this wealth in these stories. There is just a great desire to obtain this wealth of resources. Therefore, the comparison to wisdom as precious as treasure is something we must take notice of.
Proverbs 2:6 –The Lord gives wisdom
“The Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.”
As we talked about previously, when it comes to wisdom we gain it from experience, knowledge, and good judgment that comes from the word of God. This verse reiterates this fact. The greatest level of wisdom will come from God.
Proverbs 2:10-14- Benefits of Wisdom
10 When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul, 11 Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you, 12 To deliver you from the way of evil, From the man who speaks perverse things, 13 From those who leave the paths of uprightness To walk in the ways of darkness; 14 Who rejoice in doing evil, And delight in the perversity of the wicked;
When you gain wisdom in your heart-
This is important to me because you can’t just say you have wisdom because you make a good decision or a decision that yielded great results. Instead, when it is in your heart, it means the steps that you take to even make a decision will be different. The bible says “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45). Operating in Godly wisdom will yield a new approach before a decision is made: consulting God, discerning the situation, and evaluating the matter carefully.
And knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul-
Soul- principal of life, feeling, thought, and action in human
When we begin to cherish and appreciate knowledge from the Word of God in our soul we will be able to fully make wise decisions. Since it is an appreciating in the soul that means our life, feelings, thoughts, and actions will line up with the word, thus producing wisdom.
Discretion shall preserve thee-
Discretion- the power or right to decide or act according to one’s own judgment
Preserve- to keep alive or in existence, make lasting
This part of the verse reveals one of the benefits of operating in wisdom. We gain a level of discretion that allows us the power to make a decision that lines up with the Word of God that we have retained in our hearts that will keep us alive (I believe this is both spiritually and naturally).
The treasure of wisdom has present rewards as well as eternal ones. Operating with wisdom in life day to day will keep us on the right path and in the will of God. In addition, I believe allowing the Word of God to be our guide to decision making will allow us to have a peace of mind. In whatever situation we are in, we have to make a decision to consult God for wisdom on what to do. He may lead you to a person, a scripture, he may give you a direct word, or may bring someone in your path. When you pray, just trust that God will lead.
